This week, we explored the ill-fated Franklin Expedition through song, video, discussion, maps, and group activities. The story of the Franklin Expedition gave us a framework to discuss Canadian national identity; the importance of oral storytelling; the accuracy of indigenous oral history; and exploration in Canada's North. The students also had the opportunity to write a persuasive letter to Queen Victoria from the perspective of Lady Jane Franklin, Sir John Franklin's wife. Farewell and Thank You to Rosemary NixonThis week, we said farewell and thanks to Rosemary Nixon. The talented author and educator worked with our class on "juicy words", approaching reading as a writer, and provided endless enthusiasm and encouragement (alliteration, anyone?!). The class participated in a group writing tribute on Thursday to help send her off; there was not a dry eye in the classroom.
